On June 3rd, local time, US President Trump signed an order to increase tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%. The tariff policy will take effect on June 4, 2025, Eastern Time.

According to a statement issued by the White House, the US tariff on steel and aluminum imported from the UK will remain at 25%. From July 9, 2025, the US may adjust the applicable tariff rate in accordance with the terms of the Environmental Policy Statement and establish import quotas for steel and aluminum. If the UK is found to have failed to comply with the relevant provisions of the Environmental Policy Statement, the applicable tariff rate may be increased to 50%.

On May 30th, local time, US President Trump said at a rally in Pennsylvania that he would increase tariffs on imported steel from 25% to 50%. Trump immediately posted on the social media platform that the decision would take effect from June 4th. On May 31st, a spokesperson for the European Commission said that the EU is ready to take countermeasures, including responding to the recent US tariffs. The European Commission is currently in final consultations on expanding countermeasures. According to a report by Canadian official media on May 30, Canadian industry expressed strong opposition to US President Trump's plan to double steel and aluminum tariffs. Bea Brusque, president of the Canadian Labour Congress, said that the US government's reckless move will have an impact on the Canadian economy.
