Which industries have new demands for steel?

2025-06-13

From the perspective of special steel demand, the automotive industry accounts for the highest proportion, about 40%; followed by industrial manufacturing, accounting for about 20%.

These two areas have become the main driving force for domestic special steel consumption. At the Special Steel New Technology, New Process, New Product Development and Application Summit Forum, experts from the automotive industry and the engineering machinery industry introduced the development trends of their own industries and put forward new requirements for special Steel Products and performance.

The automotive industry's demand for special Steel Continues to grow

Due to its unique physical, chemical and process properties, special steel plays an important role in automobile manufacturing. In recent years, the automotive industry's demand for special steel has shown a trend of sustained growth. The sales share of new energy passenger cars has increased rapidly, and the rapid development of new energy vehicles has made the automotive industry's pursuit of lightweight more urgent. Materials such as high-strength steel and ultra-high-strength steel are increasingly widely used in new energy vehicles due to their excellent lightweight performance. At the same time, the increasingly stringent environmental regulations have also prompted the automotive industry to seek low-carbon and environmentally friendly steel materials to reduce carbon emissions and environmental pollution.

In addition, the development of new energy intelligent networked vehicles has put forward higher requirements for the performance of steel. The automotive industry needs steel with special properties to meet the requirements of new models for new functions and applications in new scenarios. Therefore, special steel companies need to continuously strengthen technological innovation and improve the production process and product quality of special steel to meet the diversified needs of the automotive industry.
There are many types of special steel used in automobile manufacturing, including cord steel, gear steel, cold heading steel, bearing steel, spring steel, alloy steel, non-quenched and tempered steel, heat-resistant steel, free-cutting steel and carbon structural steel, etc., which are mainly used in the manufacture of automotive structural parts, transmission systems, safety parts, electronic devices, etc. In terms of structural parts, the body structure and chassis parts made of special steel can improve the rigidity and durability of the body; in the transmission system, gears and bearings made of special steel have higher load-bearing capacity and longer service life; in terms of safety parts, seat belt buckles, airbag brackets and other parts made of special steel can ensure better protection in collisions; in electronic devices, special steel can provide electronic devices with stable electromagnetic shielding performance and good conductivity. In the future, with the continuous development of the automotive industry and technological progress, the application prospects of special steel in automobile manufacturing will be broader.
The demand for special steel in the construction machinery industry is constantly upgrading

With the steady growth of the global construction machinery market and the gradual increase in China's market share, the demand for special steel in the construction machinery industry is also constantly upgrading. At present, construction machinery is developing in the direction of large-scale and green, which puts forward higher requirements on the performance of special steel.

In terms of large-scale, with the continuous emergence of super projects such as nuclear power, high-rise buildings, and large-span bridges, construction machinery is developing in the direction of large tonnage and high meters, which puts forward higher requirements on material specifications, strength and other properties. At the same time, driven by the efficient mining of large mines, the demand for special steel with wear resistance and fatigue resistance in construction machinery is also increasingly urgent.

In terms of green, lightweight technology has become the key to improving energy utilization and achieving green development in construction machinery. However, green special steels such as low-density steel still have many problems in welding dust and performance verification, which need to be solved urgently.

In addition, the construction machinery industry has also put forward higher requirements for the low carbonization of special steel. Shan Zenghai suggested that special steel enterprises should speed up the research and development and supply of low-carbon emission steel to meet the needs of host enterprises to select green and low-carbon materials from the source. At the same time, relying on the low-carbon emission steel and data support of special steel enterprises, establish a product carbon footprint management system that links upstream and downstream to create a low-carbon ecological network.
Upstream and downstream work together to promote the high-quality development of the special steel industry
Facing the ever-increasing market demand and technological challenges, special steel enterprises need to strengthen cooperation with upstream and downstream enterprises in the industrial chain, work together, and jointly promote the high-quality development of the special steel industry.
